Katrin Mates
I paint because I am looking for something. In my pictures, I chase after a light that I saw - or thought I saw - as a child in Samarkand.
My art is an attempt to capture this triad - the fleeting moment of security, confidence and boundless possibilities that I first experienced in my often lonely childhood on a trip to Samarkand.
In 2012, while pursuing a career in the humanities, I rediscovered my passion for painting, especially the fascinating traditional craft of colored paper making. The unique possibilities of textured papers
papers have particularly inspired me and have become my preferred medium. I combine this traditional 17th century technique with modern painting. This results in abstract pictures with complex layers of color and dynamic movement. The colors challenge and complement each other.
By experimenting with materials such as gold leaf, comb, palette knife, plants, shells and my hands, I leave individual traces.
My art is a constant flow of movement and change, a new beginning and an invitation to continue searching.
